Dental Implants Overview
If you are plagued by missing teeth, dental implants can restore your smile and provide long-term stability to maintain your mouth's bite and function. Learn more about what to expect during the dental implants procedure.
Your First Appointment
If you are considering dental implants as an option to replace your missing teeth, your dentist or oral surgeon will set up an initial consultation appointment. During this appointment, your teeth, gums, and bone structure will be thoroughly examined to determine if you are an appropriate candidate for dental implants. Your dentist may opt for a single-tooth replacement or a multiple-tooth replacement, depending on your individual needs. If you are an ideal candidate for dental implants, dental X-rays will be taken and a treatment plan will be established.
Your Second Appointment
Your dental implant will be surgically placed during your second appointment. During this stage of the procedure, a titanium rod is placed into the jaw through the gum tissue, where it will fuse to the bone in the following months. A temporary restoration may be placed on the implant for aesthetic purposes during the healing process. Your dentist will give you a set of instructions with information on caring for your implant while it heals. Full healing may take up to six months.
Your Third Appointment
Once the implant rod and bone have fused together and healed, the artificial tooth is ready to be placed. The temporary restoration will be removed, and a specially fabricated dental crown is attached to the implant. These crowns are typically composed of ceramic or porcelain. The crown is created to match the color and size of your surrounding teeth, so the final result is seamless.
Caring for Your Dental Implants
You should treat your dental implants as you would your natural teeth. Your dentist will likely want to see you every few months to check the dental implants and perform routine check-ups and cleanings. Good oral hygiene and regular dental visits will help keep your dental implants beautiful for years to come.
